CEPT Library invites you to a book talk organized by CEPT Library featuring the book Brick Architecture Craft in Nineteenth-Century South India: Reading Buildings as Archives, published by Routledge in 2025. The author, Priya Joseph, will briefly speak about the book, followed by a conversation with Sonal Mithal.

Priya Joseph is an architect, writer, and educator with a PhD in Art and Design. She is a Professor at the Srishti Manipal Institute of Art, Design and Technology, Bengaluru, where she also heads the MDes programs. Her research and practice focus on material and design, as well as the history and theory of architecture, with a special emphasis on material-tectonics.

Sonal Mithal is an architect, artist, and educator, and currently serves as Chair of the Masters in Conservation and Regeneration program at CEPT University.

The book explores nineteenth-century brick architecture in South India through the lens of materiality and tectonics, highlighting indigenous and colonial intersections. It foregrounds the agency of local craftspeople and repositions dilapidated buildings as archives of construction, with case studies such as the Chatrams of Thanjavur, Rosary Church in Hassan, and Fort School in Bengaluru.

Join us on Tuesday, 23rd September 2025, at 6:30 PM at the Sagara Basement, CEPT University.

CEPT Library looks forward to your participation.
