The talk will explore the origin of the tabla, its making and evolution from being only an accompanying instrument to one that has a well-developed solo repertoire and tradition. It will also explore the six major gharanas, or styles, of tabla playing, and its application in Indian music, vocal, instrumental, and for dance (Kathak).
