Program brief

The PhD program at the Faculty of Architecture is designed to create a repository of in-depth knowledge related to history, theory, design, pedagogy, human habitat, human-nature relations and similar areas through a combination of theoretical foundations, thematic explorations and academic rigour. Encouraging original research on architecture in India and the Global South, critical engagement with international scholarship forms a significant part of the program. 

It is expected that the graduate of the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Program at the Faculty of Architecture will be a thought leader in their area of expertise contributing to the larger practice of research as an independent researcher, teacher, academic with a deep disciplinary knowledge related to architecture and allied disciplines. Oriented towards areas like history, theory, education, post-colonial studies, human-nature relations, within the global south, the programme offers an opportunity for deep, yet, exploratory investigations in architectural research while anchoring them to critical theoretical discourse, foundational knowledge, sustained on systematic, structured and rich empirical data. It encourages the scholars to share their work amongst peers and experts through on-campus events as well as in conferences, seminars and publications, nationally and internationally.

Situated within India’s foremost programs for architectural education, the program creates a distinctive opportunity for the doctoral candidates to engage with the community of distinguished national and international researchers, experts and faculty. They are encouraged to actively participate in teaching and research activities on campus. Graduates of the programme are, thus, well prepared for careers in academia, educational institutions and independent research. Each scholar is assigned their own expert committee, thus offering them focused faculty mentorship. The candidate has an opportunity of choice in their selection of their committee.

CEPT University offers financial assistance to the doctoral scholars in the form of full tuition fee waiver. The applicants are also eligible for a President's Scholarship, amounting to *Rs 40,000 per month during the coursework residency (subject to review after the first semester). The selection for this scholarship is based on their performance during the admission process.

There will be an opportunity to work on campus as teaching or research associates or tutors, as applicable. The students shall be paid as per the University norms for each position, allowing them to engage in research and earn.

Key Features

The PhD program has been designed for an optimum duration of four and a half years. The first year is devoted to full-time, in-residence coursework that builds advanced theoretical, conceptual, and methodological foundations. During this period, doctoral students may also engage in teaching assistance and/or faculty-led research projects.

At the end of the coursework phase (semester 3), the students undergo a qualifying examination to demonstrate competence in their disciplinary field and proposed area of specialisation. The successful candidates are then awarded the PhD candidacy in the program.

During semester 4, the PhD candidates develop and defend a detailed doctoral research proposal under the guidance of their Dissertation Advisory Committee. On clearing this stage, the candidates are given up to two and a half years (until the end of Semester 9) to complete and submit their doctoral dissertation for external examination.
