Profile of the speaker:
Prof. V.R.Shah is an academician and practicing structural designer. He is founder and principal structural designer at Vinod Shah Consulting Engineers Pvt. Ltd, firm engaged in design of structures.
He taught at CEPT University for almost 35 years. He was engaged in teaching structure to architects, engineers and designers. He also headed the PG Course in structural design, a course unique in nature as it was for educating engineers to be designers. Here he got the opportunity to implement the teaching methodology of the studio which is generally used for teaching designers. The success of the method has been recognized by many Universities and has started implementing it.
As he was professor of structures in architecture, his practice as a structural designer is also with sensitive architects with whom his office can engage from inception of architectural design. His office tries to contribute to realize the creative ideas of architects with use of innovative materials and systems.
In the post-earthquake work at Gujarat as well as Kashmir he was involved in reconstruction of school buildings and water towers. He was in charge of the National Resource Institute for training of teachers for seismic aspects. He delivered lectures as a resource person for training of architects for seismic aspects in colleges of architecture in India. He has offered workshops on Structure and architecture for students of architecture in many schools of architecture in India. He was a member of board of studies for many schools of architecture and Civil Engineering in Gujarat and he still continues as a member in some of them. His present interests are seismic design of buildings, seismic resistance of vernacular structures and teaching pedagogy for students of architecture and engineering. He has presented papers at various international conferences and workshops.
At present he is involved in teaching structure as a visiting faculty at CEPT University, Nirma University and Navrachna University. With his extensive experience in teaching and practice of structural design,he has started offering studios unique in nature to students of architecture where students are taught to emphasize tectonics in architecture.
This expert session is jointly coordinated by the Faculty of Technology and IAStructE CEPT student chapter CEPT University. It is open to all.
