The Student Body of the Faculty of Planning commemorates this week by celebrating a four day event Prameya. Prameya as it understood in Sanskrit means ‘a hypothesis’ loosely translating to a possibility. Through this event, we aim to take up discussions revolving around the various possibilities in understanding human settlements and its environs.
The theme for the year: ‘Cities: Now and After’, (as a continuation of the previous year’s theme ‘Cities: Then and Now’). Cities function with the synergy of 3 P’s – people, places and plans – which evolve over time, drawing from histories, geographies, communities, politics and socio- economies that mould them. If cities of now are being shaped by people, then cities of the future are to be led by innovative ideas and schools of thoughts.
With different ideas for our imminent and long-term futures, it is imperative to understand the problems cities face today in order to develop a foresight for managing the plausible transitions into the future. Hence, we stand at a point in discussion where we have to chart out a path of how we would want to ‘plan’ and ‘design’ our cities.
The UN-propagated global theme of ‘Municipal Solid Waste Management’ will be appreciated through events and exercises aimed at creating sensitivity towards responsible consumption, while the core event of Prameya will be held from 5th October, 2018 to 7th October, 2018 and will involve urban practitioners and academicians sharing their insights on the cities of today in comparison to the cities of the future. The event aims at fostering learning, triggering conversations and creating a dialogue between the people who play a role in shaping our cities’ today, with the students who will do so, for the cities’ future.
