Tunnelling & Rock Engineering Expert | President, ISRM Commission on Hard Rock Excavation
Profile of the speaker:
Known as “Tunnel man of India”, Dr. Manoj Verman is a Tunnelling & Rock Engineering Expert. He is a specialist in tunnelling & rock caverns, rock mechanics, mining, field instrumentation and non-destructive testing. He has a career spanning more than 38 years. He received his graduation in civil engineering from Punjab Engineering College. He received his M.Tech in Rock Mechanics from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. Bangalore University. He received his PhD. in Rock Mechanics from Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee.
There are hardly any tunnel projects in the world which haven't had challenges. Each new tunnel construction is not same as previous one. It is not possible to calculate a quantitative factor regarding safety of tunnel construction because of number of uncertainties related to loads and material properties. Experience and engineering judgement help to make considered and informed decision, but continuous measurements during construction are essential to compare actual behavior with the predicted.
The proposed lecture strives to appraise the basic aspects of tunnelling and factors influencing tunnel behavior. Focus would be on tunnelling approaches and the methods involved with some case studies.
