Institutional Roles: Program Chair - Master’s in Architectural Tectonics and Rector - Boys Hostel

Sankalpa is an academic and a practising architect. He is an associate professor of construction at the Faculty of Architecture, CEPT University (Ahmedabad, India). He is currently the program chair of the MAT (Masters in Architectural Tectonics) program at the University, which focuses on design and detailing aspects of architecture. His area of expertise is in the detailing of architecture. His studio involves comprehending structural principles and their articulation as a strategy for architectural design. He has been keen on developing methods of teaching construction that involve bodily movement and modelling techniques that can be experienced and verified. He has contributed several book chapters on various aspects of construction and technology. He and his students and fellow tutors collaboratively share many design registrations. His current applied research focuses on furthering the use of split bamboo construction in India. He has also conducted several construction-based workshops with students in India. He has served on government and NGO committees advising on housing and construction issues in India. He is a co-founder of thumbimpressions, an award-winning collaborative practice involved in design, construction, and detailing. He is a lifetime member of the Bamboo Society of India and a board member of Karigarshala, an organisation working to build artisanal skills for youth deprived or disinterested in formal education.
