Uttam C. Jain gifts his work to the CEPT Archives

The works of architect Uttam C. Jain were generously gifted to the CEPT Archives by his family, Shona and Chirag Jain. The physical collection is currently being processed at CEPT Archives and will be available to researchers, students, and anyone interested.

Kartikeya Shodhan, Head of CEPT Archives, and Saman Quraishi, Assistant Archivist, finalized the acquisition process at Ahmedabad in Jul 24.

Uttam C. Jain, born in 1934 in Malwara, Rajasthan, is an architect and planner recognized for his contributions to Indian architecture. He earned his undergraduate degree in architecture from IIT Kharagpur in 1958 and pursued advanced studies at the National University of Tucumán, Argentina (195859). Jain began his private practice in 1961 and later established UCJ architecture & environment in 2008 as a partner with Shona Jain and Chirag Jain.

He is an avid photographer, and his photography has received high recognition, particularly for the photo essay Through an Architect’s Eye’ which was exhibited at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA), Piramal Gallery in Mumbai in October 1991.

Some of his notable projects include the Jai Narayan Vyas University, Jodhpur; Barkatullah Khan Stadium, Jodhpur; Kota Engineering College, Kota; Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research, Mumbai; Habib Ganj Railway Station, Bhopal; Jaipur Nagar Nigam, Jaipur; Universal Harmony Hall & International Exhibition Centre, Mt. Abu and Jawaharlal Darda Institute for Engineering & Technology, Yavatmal. Additionally, he won multiple architectural competitions, further adding to the list of his noteworthy projects.

Jain was actively involved in academia as a visiting faculty member and examiner at institutions in India and abroad, including the Sir J. J. College of Architecture and the Academy of Architecture in Mumbai, the University of Moratuwa in Moratuwa, Sri Lanka and the National University of Singapore in Singapore. He served on various professional committees, including the Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee. His editorial contributions include serving as the honorary editor of the Journal of the Indian Institute of Architects.

Jain’s work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Pratt Institute (New York), the Belgrade Triennial (Yugoslavia), and the Vistara — Festival of India.
