Ved Segan gifts his work to the CEPT Archives

The works of architect Ved Segan have been generously gifted to the CEPT Archives by his nephew, Pankaj Jhunja, and with the efforts of Prerna Shetty, Shreeamey Phadnis, and Trisha Kantol from Studio Gestalt, based in Pune and Swapnali Ladpatil from Ved Segan – Architects & Designers.

The acquisition was finalised in Pune in August 2024 by Kartikeya Shodhan and Saman Quraishi from the CEPT Archives. This significant physical collection, comprising drawings, documents, photographs, and more, is currently being processed at the CEPT Archives and will soon be accessible to researchers, students, and all those interested in exploring Ved Segan’s work.

Ved Segan was born on October 2, 1940, and is a distinguished Indian architect with a prolific career spanning over six decades. He completed his architectural education at the Academy of Architecture, Bombay, in 1965. He completed his architectural internship with Architects Combine and continued working with the firm thereafter. Later, establishing his practice Ved Segan – Architects & Designers” in 1968 in Mumbai, which delivered a wide array of projects ranging from private residences and industrial buildings to showroom interiors, restaurants, offices and various cultural institutions.

Some of his notable works include residences for eminent personalities of Indian Cinema, the interior of Film Walla’s office, the Prithviraj Kapoor Memorial Trust and similar projects in the neighbourhood of Juhu, Mumbai. Other projects include conservation and restoration of the historic Gaiety Theatre Environ in Shimla. Segan’s projects have extended beyond Mumbai to Surat, Meerut, Goa, Panchgani, Udaipur, Jaipur, Bangalore and Kolkata.

Post his graduation, he also served as a visiting lecturer for over a decade at premier institutions like the Academy of Architecture, Sir J.J. College of Architecture, the Bandra School of Architecture, SNDT University, and KRVIA in Mumbai. Ved Segan, during his tenure at the Academy of Architecture, Mumbai, represented the institution during the visit of the Development Planning Unit of University College London, reflecting his deep commitment to global learning and urban development.

His multidisciplinary expertise encompasses the design of performance spaces, international exposure in housing design, and the creation of sound recording studios, informed by research visits to Australia, the United Kingdom, France, and the Middle East.

He was a founder member of the Bombay Conservation Group. Also, he is an associate member of various professional bodies, including the Indian Institute of Architects (IIA), Practising Engineers, Architects and Town Planners Association (PEATA), and the Indian Institute of Interior Designers (IIID).

Through his enduring dedication to quality, innovation, and cultural relevance, Ved Segan has left an indelible mark on Indian architecture and continues to inspire generations of designers and architects. A pioneer in integrating traditional sensibilities with modern technologies, his legacy reflects a deep commitment to architecture, design education, and cultural preservation.
