About Sophiya Islam

Sophiya is an architect and urban designer with over eight years of experience spanning teaching, research, and professional practice. Her work and research focus on exploring the intricate relationship between the social and spatial dimensions of cities, with a strong interest in how urban form influences everyday life, equity, and collective experiences in urban environments.
Sophiya holds a Bachelor of Architecture from Aligarh Muslim University (2015) and a Master of Planning (Urban Design) from CEPT University (2020). Since completing her postgraduate studies, she has been actively engaged in academia, teaching postgraduate urban design studios at CEPT University. She has also briefly taught at SPA Delhi. Alongside teaching, she has worked in professional roles, including her association with ITDP India, where she contributed to the scale-up of street transformation initiatives across multiple Indian cities. In 2022, she founded Urban Design Square, an independent organization dedicated to research and inquiry in urban development.
