Program brief
Life at Bachelor’s in Design | Faculty of Design | CEPT University
Our B.Des (Hons) program is the only five-year undergraduate design program in India, structured to provide both breadth and depth through a progression from foundational learning to advanced professional engagement.
- Choice-Based and Studio-Led Learning: Our students design their own academic pathways by selecting from a wide range of design studios and elective courses. The studio conducted in small, interactive groups is at the core of learning, accounting for nearly 70% of semester credits.
- Majors and Pathways: You may pursue design education through a customised academic pathway in Product Design, Communication Design, or Multidisciplinary Design. This flexibility enables you to align your learning with your individual interests and professional aspirations—whether by choosing a Product Design major, a Communication Design major, or opting not to select a major at all. .
- Interdisciplinary Foundation: In your first year, the CEPT Foundation Program helps you build a strong base in design thinking, drawing, and working with materials. You will explore the core skills of design: making, storytelling, visual expression, form, and process.
- Professional and Research Orientation: The final year emphasizes research and professional practice through industry immersion, advanced studios, and collaborative research inquiry, preparing graduates for the realities of the design profession.
Our studios have a faculty-student ratio ranging from 1:8 to 1:12 allowing for personalised learning. Students engage with tutors from both academic and professional backgrounds, bringing diverse approaches and exposure to real-world practices. Studios run for 16 weeks each semester, complemented by 12-week courses that build analytical, technical, and conceptual skills.
Our program offers a wide array of studios focusing on Medium and Materiality, Practices and Processes, Systems and Strategies, Research and Profession. Together, they enable students to learn by doing, reflecting, and reimagining the role of design in everyday life.
Graduates of our program are equipped to work across diverse domains of design and creative industries. Our alumni have found opportunities in design consultancies, product and communication design firms, research and innovation organizations, and entrepreneurial ventures. Our graduates have also gone on to pursue higher education or in interdisciplinary roles connecting design with technology, culture, and social development.
