Master’s in Structural Engineering Design

The Master’s in Structural Engineering Design (MSED) is designed to cultivate engineering proficiency in the field of Structural Engineering in line with the ever-changing demands of the profession. With a unique blend of theory and practise this program not only trains civil engineers but also architects  to connect fundamentals of geometry, materials and forces for the wide gamut of ambitious structures being designed across the world.

This program follows a studio pedagogy where live projects of various scales and categories are solved, designed, and detailed by students under the guidance of faculty members. The studios and courses of the program elicit critical thinking abilities in the students to face the challenges, seek opportunities and solutions with innovative and integrative technologies in structural engineering and construction. The studios are offered in understanding forms and materials, with in depth study in designing reinforced concrete and steel structures and finally culminating studying a specialised structure such as bridges, long span complex structures (airports and stadiums) or structural rehabilitation and retrofitting. The program equips the students with conceptual understanding and advanced knowledge of the materials and areas related to earthquake engineering, designing special structures such as  silos, chimneys and water tanks, foundation engineering, repairs and restoration of structures.

Apart from the cutting edge mandatory courses, the program offers elective courses on prestressed concrete, plates and shells and design of timber structures.

MSED program also actively supports student chapters of professional organisations, where students are exposed to online and on campus events organised for students to reach out to professionals and bridge the gaps between academics and industry-based practices in various fields of structural engineering. Students also have the opportunity to go out of the country for summer-winter schools and exchange studies with reputed organisations and universities.

The two-year full time post-graduate program leads to a Master of Technology (M.Tech) degree in Structural Engineering Design. The program educates civil engineers and architects to become competent structural engineers who are industry ready to work in the profession. Graduates of the MSED program have a wide array of choices of consultation in the fields of industries,  residential and commercial buildings, bridges, conservation and academics. Graduates of the program also undertake independent research or doctoral study at some of the best academies and research organisations across the world.
