Dolls Challenge 2026 1200x900
Anjali Suthar (FA UG 22), a student in the Bachelor of Architecture program at the Faculty of Architecture, and Dhavlesh Suthar (FD PG 20), an alum of the Master of Design (Building Products and Systems) program at the Faculty of Design, participated in the Design Dolls Challenge 2026, organised by Aara Play.

The national-level competition invited young designers and creative students from across India and internationally to reimagine play through dolls that are soft, sustainable, and soulful. Participants were tasked with designing a contemporary Indian doll with an original backstory that connects with and inspires people of all age groups.

The challenge emphasized cultural authenticity rooted in India’s regional diversity, emotional storytelling that is warm and relatable, global resonance through inclusive and gender-neutral design, and sustainability through eco-conscious materials. The competition was open to design and creative students worldwide, allowing individual and team submissions of up to three members.

Their project, 5 Keepers of Balance,” was awarded the Gold Winner in the Best Concept category.

The proposal is rooted in the five natural elements — earth, water, fire, air, and space — aiming to bring sustainability and balance into storytelling through play. The design explores how traditional philosophies can be translated into contemporary, engaging, and educational play objects, encouraging a deeper connection between children and nature.

The jury recognized the project for its universal relevance, cultural depth, and adaptability across diverse audiences. The dolls were also appreciated for their strong visual appeal and interactive design, with modular costume elements enhancing engagement and play value, making the concept both educational and emotionally meaningful.

The Design Dolls Challenge is a national-level initiative that encourages young designers to bring India’s stories to life through design, play, and purpose, with a strong emphasis on sustainability and emotional connection.
