Program brief
This course is established to realise the need for design, research, innovation, and experimentation in the field of interior design. It promotes theoretical discourses, advances design and technical skills, and builds professional networks in the field of interior design. The course, through its pedagogical approach, intends to build abilities in students to propose and conceptualise design solutions through the integration of professional practice, material research, aesthetics, and changing technologies in the field of interior design.
Students spend the majority of their time undertaking studio-based design learning with the integration of theoretical and technological frameworks through theory-based and making-based courses. At the end of the program, each student will be able to:
- Explore design issues of/in interior design, and generate an interior language that responds to any one or more of the: Aesthetic and Visual concerns; Societal and Cultural concerns; Economic and Production concerns; Ecological and Environmental concerns.
- Demonstrate knowledge of historical and contemporary debates in the field of interior design
- Design through research-led/ research-informed/ design position approaches for interior projects

- Interdisciplinary and Contextual Learning: Collaboration across architecture, design, and urban studies. Addressing cultural, societal, economic, ecological, and environmental contexts in design.
- Research and Innovation: Emphasis on research-led approaches and hypothesis-driven design processes. Encouraging adaptive reuse and innovative interior solutions.
- Studio-Based and Hands-On Learning: Integration of practical design studios with theoretical and technological courses. Focus on material exploration, spatial innovation, and sustainable practices.
- Professional Development and Leadership: Building networks through industry collaborations and faculty guidance. Preparing students for leadership roles by blending aesthetics, functionality, and sustainability.
- Semester 01: Foundation Studio
A common foundation curriculum undertaken by the entire cohort. This semester focuses on building interdisciplinary awareness, conceptual clarity, and essential studio skills.
- Semester 02: Vertical Studio / International Exchange Studio
Students select from a set of Vertical Studios, which are conducted jointly with students from Semester 4. These studios are designed to foster peer learning and inter-level collaboration under the guidance of experienced faculty.
A selected group of students will have the opportunity to undertake this semester as an international exchange student at one of our partner universities abroad, enriching their academic experience through cross-cultural learning and global exposure.
- Semester 03: Choice-Based Studio
Students engage in specialized studios of their choice from a curated list of offerings. This allows for academic and creative exploration aligned with their individual interests or emerging professional goals.
- Semester 04: Vertical Studio II
The Vertical Studio format, conducted alongside students from Semester 2. This model supports depth in thematic and interdisciplinary focus which enables mentorship continuity, while benefiting from diverse peer perspectives.
