About Aparajita Basu

Aparajita Basu is the Program Chair of the Master’s in Interior Design and a Senior Associate Professor at the Faculty of Architecture, CEPT University, Ahmedabad. She is also the Founder and Principal Architect of [trans]architecture, a design practice she established in 2002. The practice adopts a collaborative and transdisciplinary approach to design, bringing together expertise from multiple fields to create sustainable and context-responsive environments.Her research and teaching focus on design process methods and the history and theory of architecture and design. At CEPT University, she has contributed to the development of innovative pedagogies for the Master’s in Interior Design. She encourages inquiry-driven learning and critical engagement with design.Aparajita believes architecture and interior design are collaborative acts of inquiry that bring together people, disciplines, materials, and technologies to improve everyday life. Rather than treating buildings as isolated objects, she approaches them as interconnected systems that respond to their ecological, cultural, environmental, and human contexts. Across both professional practice and education, she values curiosity, craftsmanship, collaboration, and the pursuit of well-being through design.Over more than two decades of practice, she has led projects across institutional, residential, hospitality, retail, and interior design, while collaborating with artists, designers, craftspeople, and specialists from allied disciplines. Her work is distinguished by its integration of research, making, and transdisciplinary collaboration, reflecting a commitment to advancing design as both a professional practice and an academic discipline.
Aparajita Basu graduated in Architecture from the Institute of Environmental Design, Vallabh Vidyanagar, Gujarat, in 1996. Following a professional internship in Malaysia, where she worked on the Petronas Towers designed by César Pelli, she pursued a Master of Architecture at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, graduating in 1999.From 1999 to 2002, Aparajita worked as a Project Architect at Vastu Shilp Consultants under Pritzker Prize laureate Balkrishna Doshi. During this period, she contributed to the design and execution of notable projects, including the IMAX Theatre in Ahmedabad and Manisha House in Vadodara. This formative experience laid the foundation for her enduring interest in design excellence, craftsmanship, and the relationship between theory and practice.In 2002, Aparajita founded [trans]architecture, a design practice where she serves as Founder and Principal Architect. The practice adopts a collaborative and transdisciplinary approach to architecture and interior design, integrating expertise from multiple disciplines to create thoughtful, sustainable, and context-responsive environments. Over more than two decades, she has led a diverse portfolio of institutional, residential, hospitality, retail, and interior design projects, while collaborating with artists, designers, engineers, and consultants to enrich the design process.Since 2016, Aparajita has been teaching at the Faculty of Architecture, CEPT University, Ahmedabad, where she currently serves as the Program Chair of the Master’s in Interior Design. Her teaching and research focus on design process methods and the history and theory of architecture and design. She has played a significant role in shaping the pedagogy of the Master’s program, including the development of its Foundation Program, The Big Rethink, which encourages inquiry-based and interdisciplinary approaches to design education.
