Studio Based Learning

Studios are best suited for teaching design – where developing distinct individual character is as important as mastering specific skills. Learning happens best when small groups of students work under the tutelage of a teacher; tackle problems on their own while teachers review their work and coach students, as this enables peer to peer and tutor to peer learning communities.

Design studios in undergraduate programs in Faculty of Architecture, Faculty of Design, Faculty of Technology and Faculty of Urban Design are structured to gradually ramp up the level of skills, exposure, individuality and free exploration. Foundation studios across all disciplines are highly structured, with many exercises having similar outcomes. As a student graduates to a higher level, the curriculum is less structured and hence there is more emphasis on individuality and exploration and the outcomes may vary widely.
